In Vino Veritas — and Everything Behind It
In Vino Veritas — and Everything Behind It
The phrase In Vino Veritas is thousands of years old.
No one really knows who said it first, but historians believe it was first written down by Pliny the Elder, who lived in the 1st century AD.
In other words — wine has been, is, and always will be.
And if it could talk… oh, the stories we’d hear!
But let’s not get too philosophical.
Let’s talk about how to actually start finding your way in this endless, beautiful, slightly chaotic world of wine.
The first and most important rule of success — you have to be genuinely interested. If you’re not — that’s perfectly fine! Just admit it honestly (and preferably to us :-)) when you visit Time To Wine Rotermanni.
We’ll happily help you choose a wine you’ll truly enjoy, or answer any question you have about this magical topic.
But if the curiosity is there — and you just don’t know where to start, how not to drown in all the names, grape varieties and mysterious terms — we have a small road map for you.
Step by step. Without lectures. With a glass in hand.
Rule nr.1. Start with what you already like.
The best way to understand wine is to go deeper into what you already enjoy. Don’t demand too much of yourself, and don’t compare yourself to “those who know.” Everyone’s taste evolves — just at their own pace.
Rule nr.2. Don’t be shy about “tasty” wines.
Almost every beginner starts with soft, fruity, friendly wines. And that’s absolutely fine! Even those who now talk about the microclimate at the foot of Montrachet once did the same.
Your taste will evolve, and soon you’ll crave more structure, texture and nuance. But for now — enjoy what makes you happy. That’s what wine is all about.
Rule nr.3. Start simple.
If you’re new to wine, start with the New World — Chile, Argentina, the US, Australia. Their labels and grape varieties are easier to navigate: fewer rules, more clarity. The Old World — France, Italy, Spain — can wait until you feel more confident.
And don’t worry if Pouilly-Fumé and Pouilly-Fuissé sound exactly the same to you. They do for most people. 🙂
So don’t rush to become an expert.
The main thing is to taste, ask questions, and enjoy the ride.
And if you ever want to go a little deeper — come visit Time To Wine Rotermanni. There’s always a glass waiting, plenty of interesting wines, and a team ready to explain (with a smile) what really sets those Pouillys apart. 🙂
